Health Information

Information about a person's health is regarded as special personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and is handled with particular care.

We collect and process health and care information only where there is an appropriate lawful basis for doing so and where the information is reasonably necessary for the assessment, arrangement or provision of care or related nursing services.

Where consent is the basis on which information is processed, that consent may be withdrawn by contacting Home Angels. Withdrawal of consent may affect our ability to provide certain services where the information concerned is necessary to provide care safely.

Who We Share Information With

Personal information is only made available to members of our team who reasonably require it to perform their duties.

Carers and nursing staff involved in a person's care are provided with the information reasonably necessary to enable them to provide that care safely and appropriately.

We may use reputable third-party service providers to assist with services such as website hosting, email, data storage and website enquiries. Where third parties process personal information on our behalf, we take reasonable steps to ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place.

Some service providers may process or store information outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred outside South Africa, we take reasonable steps to ensure that the transfer complies with applicable South African data-protection requirements.

We may also disclose information where required or permitted by law, or where necessary to protect the legitimate interests, health or safety of the person concerned or another person.

We do not sell or rent personal information to third parties.

How Long We Keep It

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or for any longer period required or permitted by law, contractual obligations, insurance requirements or legitimate business purposes.

As a general practice, enquiries that do not result in care may be retained for up to 12 months.

Client and care records are retained while services are being provided and for an appropriate period afterwards.

Unsuccessful employment applications may generally be retained for up to six months unless the applicant agrees that we may retain their information for consideration for future opportunities.

Where information is no longer required, it will be securely deleted, destroyed or de-identified where appropriate.

How We Protect It

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration or destruction.

Access to personal information is restricted to people who reasonably require it to perform their duties. Appropriate measures are used to safeguard both physical and electronic records.

Where we become aware of a security compromise involving personal information, we will take appropriate steps to investigate and address it and will notify the Information Regulator and affected individuals where required by POPIA.
